I have been in early childhood music education for 26 years and in general public school music education for 4 years before that. There have been many trends that have come and gone. Preschool for the very young, sometimes less than 2 years old is one of my least favorite.
There is no judgement here of loving daycares where children of working parents go to play, socialize, learn and be safe. There is no judgement here of parents who are jumping on the earlier is better bandwagon. We are all madly in love and doing what we feel is best for our children.
Can we wonder together, why? Why 2 year old organized sports like soccer and lacrosse. Why 2 year old preschool? When this little person’s nervous system is still so vulnerable. When this little person still needs to sleep a few hours in the middle of the day, just to organize what they learn in a quiet day of play. When this little person has been on the planet less than 800 days. Why do we want them to experience, sitting still and listening, walking in a line, sitting at a table, working with paper and spending time on their own (i.e. without you or their familiar caregiver)
Where did this idea come from? I recently ran across this article
It is a little preachy but it is worth pondering.
